A few weeks back, we completed another project we always envisioned for this space: built-in storage for our mudroom! We have been hard at work knocking out projects we have planned to do, especially before our baby boy arrives in a few short months.
Before our home renovation, this space was awkward, not functional, or reaching its full potential. It was part closet, part pass through from the garage leading to the main entry hallway. When we did the walk through for our renovations, I immediately envisioned this space being the perfect little mudroom and drop zone for all of our belongings when we come home. Once we refinish our pool (hopefully by next summer), this will also be the designated place to dry off and the drop zone for wet towels and swimsuits.
The flooring in this space was inspired by a mudroom designed by Bria Hammel Interiors. As soon as I saw the classic pattern in this simple, more modern style, I knew this would be perfect for our mudroom. We also did the same tile in our laundry room. We chose gray and white ceramic 12x12 tiles and set them on the diamond pattern finished with a white grout during the renovation.
My sweet husband essentially designed and built the storage for this nook. I knew I wanted to utilize shiplap in this space because it is easy to install, and would tie in with our fireplace and breakfast nook that also has shiplap. Next, we added the four cubbies above to organize the essentials for the whole family. Next, we decided to add a "floating" bench below with open storage to set aside muddy boots and work shoes. I love the warmth and contrast the stained white oak adds to this space. We then added a few coats of primer and fresh white paint to finish the built-ins. I always say that white paint covers a multitude of sins! To complete the space, I wanted more traditional wall hooks in a chrome finish to complement our other fixtures. Finally, to top it all off, I added these water hyacinth storage baskets from The Container Store and styled the space with some greenery and a few of our closet staples.
I love having such a functional, pretty space to come home to and to keep all of my everyday things organized. Plus, it's another project we can successfully check off our to do list! Only a few more projects left!
Love, Kimberly
